Special Thanks:
There are so many members who contribute their time and energy on a voluntary
basis for special projects at the golf course. Too often these efforts are
appreciated but not mentioned. We would like to thank all of these caring
people for their special efforts. I know that this runs the risk of leaving
people out, but here goes: Pauline and Max Young for their woodworking
prowess and their contributions for the water stands, the card holders, and
the many fine touches which reflect their talent and loyalty to the club;
Bucky Scarborough for his assistance in rapairing whatever needs to be done;
Stan English for his efforts in helping on many projects and his devotion and
care of the bluebird houses on the golf course; Father Skip for developing
the "Adopt A Hole" program to assist in the general appearance of the course;
Chuck LeClair for his monitoring the care of all tee boxes; Pete Richart for
filling in divots throughout the golf course; Peter Breen, Dick Lafeve, Bucky
Scarborough, Jeff Wallin for installation of the smoke eater; Norma Meyer for
care of the plants which lend a touch of beauty to the course; Frank
Critchett for single-handedly cleaning and striping the parking lot for both
safety and organization; Jack Burckes for tiresly walking the perimeter of the
driving range and retreiving mis-directed range balls, without compensation
or reward. I know I have left out so many others and I beg forgiveness,
please bring names and special efforts to my attention. To all of you,
recognized, and overlooked, a deep heartfelt "thank you".
MORE VOLUNTEERS
HOOK A KID ON GOLF and GOLF II are programs developed by the Town of
Brandon through a grant. These programs are designed to teach local
youngsters golf and develop team building, sportmanship, and citizenship
through golf. Volunteers are needed to assist youngsters in these worthy
programs. To volunteer, please cell Karen or Denis at the pro shop.
VERMONT MID-AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
Neshobe has been selected and honored by the Vermont Golf Association as the
site of the Vermont Mid-Amateur Championship. This is one of the state's
major golfing events and will receive extensive coverage through newspaper
and television exposure. The Mid Am is our opportunity to show off Neshobe
for the entire state. We need spotters and transporters to help the event
run smoothly. Please give some of your time and call Karen or Denis to sign
up.

FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
by Keven Komer
I am always up for a challenge. The Nesh has certainly provided me with
many challenges and obstacles. There is no script that is handed to you when
you walk through the door, no manual to follow, or any type of business plan
to refer to. I have a good wealth of knowledge of how to manage a golf course
but the various microclimates present on golf courses provides many mysteries
to solve. My staff and myself are working diligently to battle through the
first year blues and provide you with a very playable and enjoyable course.
One challenge that has plagued me from day one is labor. Six employees
have come and gone for various reasons. The labor pool in this area is
extremely weak. Once you find employees the challenge is then to advocate
hard work and punctuality. This is a formidable task. I am lucky to have Kurt
Stanley as my assistant helping me with this and many other challenges. My
mechanic, Ed Black, has worked hard keeping the ailing equipment up and
running. Matt "Burns" Colvin is a valuable employee that has proved to be a
hard worker. To round out this core is Dick Phaneuf, who has been at the Nesh
since the new construction.
As far as course conditions go I believe the members need to be aware
about the importance of aerification. Aerification is THE single most
important cultural practice that needs to be done to golf course turf. It has
always perplexed me why golfers oppose this practice. It can be described as
"No Pain No Gain". If you do not aerify aggressively, especially with sand
based greens, the turf will fail. Topdressing and dethatching are also very
important for putting greens but I will only discuss aerification. There are
two reasons for aerification. One is to relieve compaction. This is not much
of a concern on sand based greens but is a huge factor with the older push-up
greens. The other reason for aerification is to remove organic matter. What
exist in the new greens right now is a thatch layer 11/2-2 inches thick. This
thatch is present because bentgrass produces large amount of vegetative
material. Excessive thatch is a recipe for disaster. What happens when this
thatch/matt layer builds up is that the roots cannot penetrate it and root
shear occurs. Root shear leads to shallow rooted turf that will fail during
hot weather or any other stress period. My advice to the members is to accept
aerification because it will only benefit the course conditions in the end.
Thank you and we will see you on the course.
